Use a set where every rep looked the same. Front squat sets tend to degrade fast: the first three are upright and the fourth is a good morning with the bar sliding forward. If the last rep of your set looked different from the first, drop it before you enter the number, or the estimate will describe a lift you cannot actually repeat.
How Accurate Is a Front Squat 1RM Estimate?
Reliable at low reps, and it assumes the rack position holds.
Between one and five reps the five formulas usually agree within a few percent, which makes the average a solid planning number. Accuracy drops as reps rise, so this tool caps the input at ten reps. Front squats have a further quirk: high-rep sets are limited by your ability to breathe and hold the rack rather than by leg strength, which makes rep counts above eight a poor guide to maximal force.
It is also worth remembering that the front squat is a technical lift. Two lifters with identical legs will produce different maxes if one has a secure clean grip and the other is fighting to keep the elbows up. The estimate tells you what your current front squat is worth, not what your legs could do in a better position. Front squat failures are actually among the easier ones to bail, because you can drop the elbows and let the bar roll off the front. That is worth practising with a light load in a rack before you ever need it, so that failing a heavy rep is a controlled event rather than a surprise.
What to Do With Your Front Squat Number
Percentages, a back squat cross-check and a level.
The percentage bars give you your training weights. Most front squat work is programmed between 70 and 85 percent for sets of three to six, since the rack position makes very high-rep front squatting more of an endurance test than a strength one.
Then run two checks. Divide your estimate by your back squat max: it should land near 85 percent, and well below that points at the upper back rather than the legs. How do you calculate a front squat max?
Enter the total bar weight and the reps you completed above. The calculator applies five published prediction formulas and averages them, which gives a more stable estimate than any single equation.
What percentage of my back squat should my front squat be?
About 85 percent for most lifters, with 80 to 90 percent being a normal range. If yours is well under 80 percent, the limiting factor is usually the rack position and upper back rather than leg strength.
How many reps should I use?
Three to six is ideal. The tool accepts up to ten reps and caps it there, because front squat sets above eight reps are limited by breathing and the rack position rather than by maximal strength.
Does the bar weight count?
Yes. Enter the total load including the bar, which is 45 lb for a standard Olympic barbell or 20 kg in kilograms.
Why does my front squat feel harder than my back squat at the same weight?
Because the bar is in front of you, so your upper back has to work far harder to keep the torso upright, and any forward lean immediately threatens the rack position. That is the exercise doing its job.
